Reset a District Chromebook
This article discusses how to reset (aka powerwash, wipe, erase) a District Chromebook by yourself. You can always send a device to us for reset if you wish, but this article focuses on how to do it yourself, if that is a better option. You do not have to be at a District location in order to do this reset, but the below is (mostly) written with the assumption that you are.
Powerwashing a Chromebook is nearly always a safe and non-invasive process, and it has the useful effect of freeing up the limited storage space on many of our devices.
Remote powerwash
If you contact the Helpdesk with your Chromebook's Borough Number, and if your device is on an appropriate network with Internet access, we can issue a remote command to the Chromebook that will initiate the powerwash for you. In this case, once the command is received, the device will immediately shut down and begin; you should briefly see the "Powerwash in progress" message on your screen, and then the subsequent device setup begins. See the "Device setup after powerwash" section below.
Manual powerwash
This procedure is also described by Google here.
Make sure you are not logged in; the reset keystroke only works from the login screen. Type Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R, and the Reset this Chromebook UI comes up. On this UI, click the Powerwash button at lower right, which brings up the Confirm Powerwash dialog. Click Continue to initiate the reset.
Once you click Continue, you should briefly see the "Powerwash in progress" message on your screen, and then the subsequent device setup begins. See the "Device setup after powerwash" section below.
Device setup after powerwash
Once the reset is complete, the Chromebook will restart and be ready for a short device setup process starting at the Welcome to your Chromebook screen.
Click on Get started, and then connect to the appropriate network. If you are at a District location, you will need to get to the preferred network, KPBSD-ManagedDevices, by temporarily using the KPBSD-Guest network; the details of that little trick are discussed in the article Connect a District Chromebook to District Wireless, at the heading "Getting back on KPBSD-ManagedDevices".
Once connected to a viable network, you should see the device re-enroll itself automatically (all District Chromebooks are configured to automatically re-enroll themselves after device resets).
Click Done at the completion screen, and you should be ready to log into the Chromebook normally.
