Connect a Domain-Managed Windows PC to District Wireless
Some Windows PCs may not prompt for username and password when connecting to the KPBSD-PersonalDevices network if they are joined to and managed by a non-KPBSD domain. This is typically due to Windows attempting to supply the user's domain credentials to the 802.1x authentication used by this network rather than prompting for the account that should be used (usually an employee, student, or building guest account supplied by KPBSD). Follow the below process to manually define and connect to the KPBSD-PersonalDevices network.
Solution
- If you have previously attempted to connect to this network, you should forget it before adding it in manually.
- Go to the Windows Control Panel > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
- Select Forget next to KPBSD-PersonalDevices.
- Manually define the KPBSD-PersonalDevices network (This part can only be done from the Windows Classic Control Panel).
- From the Windows Classic Control Panel, go to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Setup new connection or network.
- Select Manually connect to a wireless network.
- Enter KPBSD-PersonalDevices for the network name, select WPA2-Enterprise security, and Start this connection automatically. Click Next when done.
- Select Change connection settings on the next screen.
- On the next screen, select the Security tab at the top of the window.
- Make sure the Security type is set to WPA2-Enterprise and the Encryption type is AES.
- Make sure the authentication method is set to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) and then click Settings to the right of this.
- In the new window, uncheck the Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate option and set the Authentication Method to (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
-
- Select Configure next to the Authentication Method and then uncheck the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password option. Click OK when done to exit this window.
- Back in the Protected EAP Properties window, click OK to exit.
- Back in the KPBSD-PersonalDevices Wireless Network Properties window, click Advanced settings.
- Make sure the Specify authentication mode is checked and set to User authentication.
-
- Select Save credentials and enter the KPBSD username and password you intend to connect to the KPBSD-PersonalDevices wireless network with.
- Click OK followed by OK again to save all settings and then exit.
- Connect to the KPBSD-PersonalDevices wireless network.
