Log In to the Chrome Browser
If you are a District employee or student, we encourage you to take advantage of your District Google Apps account by using it to log in to your Windows machine's Chrome browser. This is not the same thing as just accessing your District Gmail account in the browser's content area, which you can do with any browser (e.g., Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.); if you sign into the Chrome browser itself, you can sync key data to and from your District Google Apps account, most notably Bookmarks, but also (at your option) saved passwords, histories, extensions, and a few other settings. (When you sign in to a District Chromebook, you are essentially doing the same thing as we're discussing here, and that's a good way to think about using this feature.)
There is little reason not to take advantage of this setup. You already have the District Google Apps account, separate from any personal Google account you may have, and using the District account to sync bookmarks, extensions, histories, etc., means that your Chrome browser experience can be substantially the same whether you're on a Chromebook or a Windows PC. Also, if you get your Windows PC re-imaged, you can "get back" all these synced items just by signing in to the new, out-of-box Chrome installation on the newly imaged PC.
How Do I Log In?
Step 1. On your computer, open the Chrome browser.
Step 2. At the top right, to the right of the address bar, click the Profile icon. You should see the sign-in panel.
Step 3. Sign in to your District Google Account. You'll use your District Gmail address for this (e.g., john.doe@g.kpbsd.org), and after supplying that @g.kpbsd.org account name, you should be prompted for your KPBSD single-sign-on account information (E-number and password for employees, student number and password for students; just like logging in to a District Windows PC). From there, proceed through any verification prompts, and your sign-in should complete. (Employees, remember that your Exchange mail, your @kpbsd.k12.ak.us email address, will not work here, even if you forward all your District Gmail to your Exchange mail. :-)
Step 4. A complete sign in process should be reflected in an updated Profile icon, and you should also get a prompt to sync/link your District account's data to this Chrome browser. Click on Link data to proceed.
Step 5. At the Turn on sync? dialog, click Yes, I'm in to begin syncing all available options, or use the Settings button to manage and then Confirm the settings you want.
At this point, you should be good to go, and you may see browser bookmarks and extensions show up immediately in the UI.
Also, note that Google has more information at this link, which should remain up to date as the Chrome browser UI evolves.
When Do I Log Out?
This depends on what kind of machine you're using.
On a District Chromebook, you don't need to worry about it at all. The way Chromebooks work, when you log in to the Chromebook itself, you also log in to the browser--and when you log out of the Chromebook, your browser data is locked up too.
On a District Windows machine, your login to the Chrome browser, as described above, is separate from your Windows login, so you do have to affirmatively log in to Chrome after logging in to Windows. But...your Chrome settings, including any sync login, travel with your Windows user profile, so when you log out of Windows on that PC, your Chrome settings are protected within your Windows profile on that machine.
On a non-District machine (e.g., personal Windows PC or Mac), you certainly can choose to sync a Chrome browser with your District Google Apps account; you'll just want to be aware of when you'd want to sign out of that sync session. For the most part, operating systems maintain separate Chrome settings for each user account, just like we do in the District. But, if you regularly share a Windows or MacOS user account with other people, you may want to affirmatively sign out to protect your data.
