Connect a District iOS Device to District Wireless
This article covers the basics of getting a District iOS device onto the most appropriate of the available District wireless networks.
Which Network?
You should always use the KPBSD-ManagedDevices network unless there is a specific reason to prefer the KPBSD-PersonalDevices network for an assigned 1:1 device, usually for reasons of web content filtering. And we do not recommend KPBSD-PersonalDevices for anything but a 1:1 device: if you regularly hand your iPad to students to use, you may not want to have the iPad connected to the web content filter with your E-number. (If you have questions about this, contact the Helpdesk.)
Connecting to KPBSD-ManagedDevices
This should be as simple as choosing the KPBSD-ManagedDevices network from the list of available wireless networks in the Settings app under Wi-Fi; you should not be challenged for connect credentials when you do this. If you are challenged for a password, it means that for some reason the configuration profile that contains the connect information is either expired, corrupted, or missing. In this case, we can use another network temporarily, to get the device back onto its preferred network.
Getting back on KPBSD-ManagedDevices
Connect to KPBSD-Guest
The KPBSD-Guest network should work for this little do-si-do task. Once connected to the guest network, the iOS device should immediately "check in" with our device management server, which will push down the credentials for the preferred KPBSD-ManagedDevices network in the form of a "configuration profile". This process can happen in as little as a minute, but depending on the school's network speeds and load, might take longer. In general, you can think of giving the device 5-10 minutes of being connected to the guest network, and then trying to confirm success.
To connect to KPBSD-Guest, just select that network name from the available networks list as described above; you should be able to connect without being challenged for any credentials.
Confirm KPBSD-ManagedDevices
To confirm that our little do-si-do worked as intended, try again to connect to KPBSD-ManagedDevices as illustrated above. In recent versions of iOS--that is, if your device is reasonably new and up to date--the KPBSD-ManagedDevices network should, when the profile becomes available, automatically migrate itself to the "My Networks" group between the currently connected network above, and the list of unconnected networks below; as soon as you see it migrate to "My Networks", you should be able to test it.
If that continues to fail, even after giving it, say, half an hour on the guest network, and after fully restarting the device (i.e., actually shut down and power up again), please contact the Helpdesk.
Forget KPBSD-Guest (optional)
In recent and well-behaved iPads, it isn't strictly necessary to affirmatively "forget" the guest network. The way we have the wireless networks and the iPads configured, your well-behaved District iPad should always "prefer" the more secure KPBSD-ManagedDevices network, to the less-secure KPBSD-Guest network. However, you may choose to remove the guest network either to reduce clutter, or if your device still seems to want to prefer the guest network over others. This is your call.
To forget a network in iOS, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and tap on the blue Information icon for the network you want to forget. On the information screen for that network, you will either see an option to Join This Network, or Forget This Network. If you see Join This Network, it is confirmation that you do not have a stored connection for that network, and you do not need to do anything to actively forget the network.
If you do see Forget This Network, tap it and confirm, and the connection will be deleted; you should be returned to the list of available wireless networks at Settings > Wi-Fi. If the network you forgot was the currently-connected network, you may shortly see another network (hopefully KPBSD-ManagedDevices) automatically connect.
If you still find yourself stuck here, by all means contact the Helpdesk.
